Matuba **
Arlington , Bethesda , ¢

There's almost as much writing on the walls as on the menus at these popular neighborhood Japanese restaurants, where handwritten signs advertising specials and new dishes are a major decorative motif. Add in the friendly, efficient service and bargain prices, and Matuba is a place where you can feel right at home.

Sushi is the main attraction here, especially on days when there's a sushi special. On Mondays, a wide variety of sushi is sold for $1 apiece, below Matuba's usual price and very much lower than at many similar restaurants. The first and third Tuesdays of the month feature an "ABC Special"assorted sushi for $5.95, beef teriyaki for $7.95, or chicken teriyaki for $5.95. Tempura is very good, light and greaseless. Tonkatsubreaded, deep-fried pork over riceis a bargain at $8.95, as are any of the donburi dishes: tempura, pork and egg, eel, or chicken and egg over rice with seasoned soy sauce.
