La Ferme *
Chevy Chase , $$

Skillfully designed to offer both intimacy and spaciousness, this restaurant is a very pleasant place to dine, and the piano player adds to the effect. The foodvaried and ambitiousis as nice as the setting, and the wine list is as enterprising as can be found in Montgomery County.

The best appetizers?Try the terrine of cold salmon with peppercorns; Icelandic scallops and morels with a pastry crust in a creamy Port wine sauce; sauteed quail served over a slice of baked potato with black-truffle sauce; a seafood sausage with fennel and coriander seeds; or the clean-tasting flan of crabmeat and broccoli served with a tomato sauce.

Good main courses include sauteed veal with Calvados and mushrooms in a cream sauce, roasted loin of lamb in a tarragon sauce, nicely cooked swordfish steak on a bed of lentils, rockfish poached with a Dijon mustard sauce, and roasted salmon on a bed of minced vegetables.

Those who like to end a rich meal richly will be very satisfied by the Grand Marnierand-white-chocolate-mousse cake or the lemon-mousse cake with a caramelized crust.
