Bistro Francais *
Washington, $

Dating back to the bistro boom of the mid-1970s, this Georgetown landmark continues to offer reliable cuisine at fair prices. If it's after midnight and you want a full dinner with a good bottle of wine, Bistro Francais is the name to remember.

Favorites from the set menu are the signature salad dressed with walnut oil, fresh Dover sole meuniere, and spit-roasted chicken with tarragon-flavored jus. A long list of daily specials frequently offers a luxurious dish of roast pigeon moistened with a truffle jus, but most of its other specialties are in the realm of French comfort food: duck confit served over white beans, roast pork with a potato gratin, pot-au-feu, and roast lamb garnished with a saute of artichokes, potatoes, and pearl onions.
