Uncle George's Greek Tavern
Bethesda

Fans of greek food know that some of the best Greek restaurants anywhere are found in the large and demanding Greek community in Astoria, Queens. It's no surprise, then, that Uncle George's, an offshoot of one of the more popular Astoria eateries, cooks well. With its hefty portions and low prices, this large and bright restaurant rarely misses.

The familiar dips are well made, especially the creamy fish-roe-based taramasalata. Other good appetizers are the charred octopus tentacles and crisp fried calamari. Popular, too, are the moussaka, pastitsio, stuffed grape leaves, and spinach- and-cheese pies, which Uncle George offers in a single combination plate. Rotisserie dishes are good, although on a recent visit the pork butt was better than the baby lamb, which had been left on the fire too long.

Whole fish come grilled, fried, and pan-fried. Some, such as the whiting, cost less than $10. Be sure to order one of the vegetable side dishes, such as baked eggplant, stuffed zucchini, or oven-roasted potatoes.
