Tako Grill
Bethesda

Diners who seek more than good raw fish at a Japanese restaurant will embrace this place. While the sushi and sashimi compare favorably with the competition, it is the variety of cooked dishes that make Tako Grill a standout.

The word "grill" in the restaurant's name refers to the robatayaki offerings, which are small and usually inexpensive servings of grilled vegetables and seafood. Prices are as low as $2 an item. Among the fine robatayaki selections are squid, clams mackerel, tiny octopus (served with a teriyaki-type sauce), and smelts. Vegetables prepared in this manner include mushrooms with ginger sauce, potatoes with butter, scallions with salt, and green peppers with ginger sauce. There is an excellent plate of mixed vegetables for $7.50.

Other good offerings include crisp tempura; steamed mussels or clams in a garlic-and-butter sauce; teriyaki of beef, chicken, or salmon; and main-course soups such as sukiyaki and yosenabe.
