Negril
Silver Spring

Those who seek moderately spicy fare should not overlook the Jamaican cooking of this simple restaurant. The setting is spare. Service consists of ordering and picking up your food at a counter and then disposing of the paper plates and plastic flatware. But the food is good and cheap.

Most appetizers are filled turnovers--spicy or mild ground beef or vegetables--or salted and deep-fried codfish balls. There are more main-course choices. Chicken comes curried, sautéed, and stewed (chicken fricassee), marinated and baked (jerk chicken), or cut up and wrapped in a large flat pancake. Other good dishes are the hearty oxtail stew and the mild goat curry. All cost less than $7.25. Slightly more expensive are the steamed or fried red snapper and the curried shrimp. The beverages of choice are a pair of spicy sodas--ginger beer and sorrel.
