Mixtec
Washington

Expatriate texans with a craving for menudo--a gently spicy tripe soup alleged to have restorative powers--will find it served daily at Mixtec. But it doesn't require an adventurous palate to enjoy this cheery little storefront's torta, a sensational Mexican-style sub stuffed with grilled pork, guacamole, refried beans, and optional hot chilies. It may be the best meal-size sandwich in the city.

But the resolve to have a torta on an initial visit to Mixtec may waver in the face of other house specialties: mussels steamed with dried chilies; tacos al carbon with a side order of grilled scallions; some of the best tacos in this area; and Yul Brynner's Burritos. Owner Pepe Montesinos prepared this last dish according to Brynner's instructions--a plate of beef burritos covered with chile colorado--when the late star played in The King and I at the Kennedy Center.
