Matuba
Arlington , Bethesda

If you can for a moment forget the decor, you might almost imagine you're in an American neighborhood diner when you visit either of these dependable Japanese restaurants. Patrons feel at home, service is friendly and efficient, the walls are plastered with signs advertising specials and new dishes. But the menu is thoroughly Japanese.

Sushi is the main attraction here, especially on days when there's a sushi special. On Mondays, sushi is $1 per piece. And the first Tuesday of every month, you can get a ten-piece assorted sushi platter for $5.95, below Matuba's usual price and very much lower than in many similar restaurants.

Tempura is very good here, light and greaseless. Tonkatsu, breaded, deep-fried pork over rice, is a bargain at $8.95, as are any of the donburi dishes--tempura, pork and egg, eel, or chicken and egg over rice with seasoned soy sauce.
