It may be the turquoise and pink vinyl upholstery, it may be the metal-edged Formica kitchen tables or a Westinghouse Roaster Oven on prominent display--something about Generous George's evokes feelings of home and comfort and plenty.

The size of the servings certainly helps. While George has moved in the direction of the "personal-size" pizza in recent years, the scaled-down pie is plenty for any normal appetite. The menu suggests combinations with names like "Positive Pineapple Pleasure" and "Taco Cha Cha," but the best approach is to order simply, topping George's very good crust with cheese and a few traditional toppings like pepperoni or mushrooms.

Lasagna is very good, and George's unique creation is the pasta pie, that good pizza crust topped with pasta. Try the pasta simply dressed with oil and garlic or with white clam sauce. The good, garlicky sauce soaks into the bread, sparing you the effort of mopping it up yourself. And you can wash it all down with 32-ounce schooners of good microbrewery beer.
