Aditi
Washington

Considering the other fine indian restaurants that appear on this list, it is only by the thinnest of margins that Aditi can be called the best. What keeps it a winner is the consistent balance it achieves among the parts of the dining experience: Its small, modern dining rooms are meticulously kept; its kitchen's work is a model of consistent quality; and its staff is as personable as it is efficient.

There is nothing on this menu that you won't find at other local Indian restaurants, but this kitchen's talent makes it seem as though you are tasting a lamb vindaloo, a Madras chicken curry, or cubes of housemade cheese simmered in spinach for the first time. Nowadays, every self-respecting Indian restaurant has a charcoal-fired clay oven, but nowhere else does one find as deliciously smoky tandoori chicken as at Aditi. For a newcomer who wants a representative sampling of the house specialties, the $13.95 tasting menu is a bargain-priced feast that will challenge any appetite.
