Travel:Fodor's Guide to Washington, D.C. Lodging and Dining

An Introduction To Washington, D.C. Dining

Most of the deluxe restaurants are downtown near K Street NW, the location of many of the city's blue-chip law firms. These are the restaurants that feed off of expense-account diners and provide the most elegant atmosphere, most attentive service, and often the best food. The other area of town long known as a restaurant district is Georgetown, whose central intersection is Wisconsin Avenue and M Street. Here, white-tablecloth dining rooms abut hole-in-the-wall joints. A youthful culinary competitor to Georgetown is Adams-Morgan. Eighteenth Street NW extending south from Columbia Road is wall-to-wall restaurants, with new ones opening so fast it's almost impossible to track them. Although the area has retained some of its Hispanic identity, the new eating establishments tend to be Asian, New American, Ethiopian, or Caribbean. South from Adams-Morgan and north from K Street is Dupont Circle, around which a number of restaurants are clustered. Some of the city's best Italian places can be found here, as can a variety of cafés, most with outdoor seating.
